Steve Matson – Lead Pastor

Loves
& Passions
I love being a husband and dad and now a grandfather (twice). I love new
adventures, discovering new places, and new experiences. I “passionately” hate
celery!
Life
changing moment
Clearly hearing God's call to ministry within a year of coming to faith (I was
already married with a baby on the way at the time). Then leaving my job in
engineering at Caterpillar Tractor Company to pursue education for ministry.
Favorite Bible story
The story of Jonathan and his armor-bearer in I Samuel 14 is my favorite Bible
story. I find it to be incredibly inspiring. I also love Isaiah
46:8-10. The sovereignty of God is of great comfort and joy to me.
What I want my legacy to be
I want my
wife to say of me that I was a faithful and loving husband. I want my children
to say of me that I loved them with faithful firmness and gentleness that
directed them toward God. I want my grandchildren to say that they saw in me a
man who had run the Christian life with passion and perseverance. I want my
church to say that I faithfully preached the word and pursued developing a
church that would be marked by the Great Commission and Great Commandment
People who had a
significant impact on my life
Sammy Tippit, who God used to bring me to faith. Also, Dan DeHaan who inspired
me and directed me to Columbia Bible College. My wife, who is my best friend
and constant source of encouragement. A host of men and women that God used to
mature, challenge, and mold me in so many ways.
People would
be surprised to know that …
I have owned (and driven) about 6 motorcycles. I am pretty much an open
book. What you see is what you get. My heart is worn consistently
on my sleeve, and I have no “poker face”. My two dreams would be to sit in the
Cubs dugout for a game at Wrigley (and to throw out the first pitch) and to
drive a yellow convertible.
Family
I’ve been married to Kyle since August 24, 1974. We have four children –
Sarah (married to my wonderful son-in-law, Chad), Cody, Austin and Peter and two grandchildren – Brandon and Tyler.
Favorite
sports team & music style
I am a Cubs and Bears fan, having grown up in Illinois. I love a
wide range of music.
Education
Pekin Community High School (state
basketball champs 1964 and 1967)
Bachelors from Columbia Bible College
MDiv from Denver Seminary
